Vernal Equinox
Occurs around March 20-21. It marks the beginning of spring and the point when day and night are approximately equal in length.
Summer Solstice
Occurs around June 20-21. It is the longest day of the year and marks the beginning of summer.
Autumnal Equinox
Occurs around September 22-23. It marks the beginning of autumn and the point when day and night are again roughly equal in length.
Winter Solstice
Occurs around December 21-22. It is the shortest day of the year and marks the beginning of winter.
The Earth's axis is tilted relative to its orbital plane, and as the Earth orbits the Sun, different parts of the Earth receive varying amounts of sunlight at different times of the year. This is what causes the changes in the length of day and night and the different seasons.
